Fort Lauderdale Fishing Report, Ft. Lauderdale Fishing Trips

Ft. Lauderdale Fishing Trips
Ft. Lauderdale Fishing Trips

Mahi-Mahi continue to be the best target species for our Ft. Lauderdale Fishing Trips. The fishing for these Mahi-Mahi (Dorado / Dolphin Fish) has been good for some time now ( as you well know if you follow our reports) with only an occasional day when they aren’t around and biting. These fish continue to pass through for the most part in depths under 250 feet. We have had the north current that we all feel is our best current every day, but today our current here offshore of Ft. Lauderdale switched around and began running strong to the south. The Mahi-Mahi didn’t seem to mind and continue to bite. Often a current change will shut the fishing down for a day or two but the Mahi are still available. We have caught the majority of these fish by trolling but of course are seeing them on the live baits we are putting out with hopes for a Sailfish bite as well. When these fish are hot and heavy on flying fish they can get a little picky and a pilchard or baby (“finger”) mullet cast to them on a spinning rod with a lighter leader will draw a bite, but you have to basically hit them in the head with an accurate cast as they move very fast when chasing flyers and have a mind set on those flyers as well. When the Mahi-Mahi are on the flyers aggressively often when you do hook one the other Mahi really don’t follow the hooked fish to boatside as well as when you find them traveling in open water. Be ready with the smaller live baits and always try to be up wind with the boat so the caster can get a good long cast, as a few extra feet on the cast allows you to reel the bait closer if the fish should happen to change direction, and also lessens the possibility of the boat spooking the fish. It’s the little things that can sometimes make or break a Ft. Lauderdale fishing trip, Remember these fish will be racing around often at close to top speed when they have flying fish in their sights. Lead them ever so slightly or hit them on the head when you pitch it out there. It makes for fun fishing.
