Fort Lauderdale fishing this time of year offers some full sized Amberjacks on the offshore wrecks. As you can see these are good sized fish and a lot of fun. They have been steadily increasing in numbers for several weeks now. They come with several nicknames, the most notable being “Reef Donkey”, “Rubberlips”, “Otis” and they often get called unprintable 4 letter words due to their tenacity and dogged fighting style. We catch these fish on circle hooks and 125 pound test leader, a one pound lead that is required to reach and hold position over the wrecks on most days, and 60 to 80 pound mainline to ensure that we can jerk them that first 30 feet up and away from the wreck. At that pint it becomes a test of wills. As we said these Jacks are a lot of fun and will test your muscle like few other fish. The best bait is live bait and this often results in a quick take once the bait is presented properly to the school of Jacks. We are also catching some Kings, Bonito, Dorado, and a few Sailfish on the edge of the reef. Larger Sharks are moving through now as well. As expected for mid April we are experiencing some warmer days and a bit if wind creating a slight chop, but nowhere enough sea conditions to affect our Fort Lauderdale fishing areas in an adverse way. |
