It is very rare to go out on a Fort Lauderdale Deep Sea Fishing Charter and land a Spear fish. For that matter it is unusual to fish anywhere in the Atlantic and catch a Spearfish. Here’s how rare it really is. I have been aboard for three Spearfish landings in over forty years of offshore fishing here in Fort Lauderdale. I was part of a team in the Bahamas when I somehow managed to troll some baits in front of one several years back. The other two catches were over 20 years ago on a Ft. Lauderdale fishing charter and were caught at the same time, a doubleheader. Care to guess how many charters ago that was? We fish a lot. Try several thousand. So when Sharon reeled this fellow in we were more than a bit surprised. We caught him on a Bonito strip fished on the longest line, our center rigger. He bounced around out there and ran some line off the TLD 25, but we had no idea what we had stumbled upon until we got a good look at her fish at boatside. Chris grabbed him by the bill and hoisted him aboard , and yes. It really WAS a Longbill Spearfish. And he still is a Spearfish because after this photo he was released back into the ocean and quickly swam away. Caught him in 750 feet of water. Six or seven Mahi-Mahi, a Wahoo, four kings (one of which was over 20# and caught by husband Mark for his biggest fish), two very fat Skipjack Tunas, and one large Barracuda we pitched a live bait to after he attacked and bit both our Skipjacks just as we prepared to boat them. He got me too as a hook found my index finger while helping Chris de-hook him and get him back over the side. Just a deep scratch, lucky lucky me. Beautiful flat calm day with a Texas couple on a Fort Lauderdale Deep Sea Fishing Charter, and a very special fish as well. |
