When you go Fort Lauderdale Deep Sea Fishing in December it is often a good idea to bring along (or be prepared to catch) some live bait. Our charter with Bill, Susan, and their kids Jimmy and Caroline was no exception. While trolling had been very good for a couple of weeks now the fish today really showed a preference for a live bait. We figured our best chance for success was by fishing the kites, and it was, as we managed a couple of Sailfish and Dorado and smaller sharks, which was fine by Jimmy and Caroline. New fish in the “Biggest Ever” category according to Jimmy who subdued a nice Sail which we released at boatside. We spent about half of the charter dead bait trolling and searching for a few Kings, Dorado or hopefully a Sail, but with only two small Kings making it to the boat. This has been the ticket for us quite often. Not today. We stopped and began live baiting out of the kites in the same area as everything looked good, considering the current, flying fish and good water color. We began our live baiting there as it was the best conditions we had encountered, even though we tried the area trolling our rigged dead baits with little success. The live baits in the kites were the answer today and our bites came quickly in 100 to 120 feet of water. The fish were moving north to south as we had expected and it was nice to have the opportunity at some nice fish. Same water and the same location, but with the desired and very different results. Keep those live bait options ready from now on as we get into our Winter months, they just might make your day. |
