Deep Sea fishing here in Ft. Lauderdale is yielding a strong run of Tunas. The majority of these fish are Blackfins. These fish were right up on the edge of the reef in 110 feet of water. Mixed in were some truly giant Bonito that were easily 20# and up. That is a fully grown Bonito everywhere Bonito are caught. Found a school of bait two days ago and it was surrounded by “real” Bonito. These Bonito are totally different than the “Little Tunny” Bonito we typically catch here and varied in size from 6 to 12 pounds. They have vertical stripes, a mouth full of teeth, and are actually not bad on the table. We had some for dinner tonight. Though not as good as a Tuna it really got pretty good reviews. We caught a nice 200 pound shark on one also so they are on the menu there as well. Caught the heck out of them (15) around that one school of bait in less than 45 minutes and then moved on. We don’t catch but 3 or 4 of these guys in an entire year. There are Mako Sharks here as well with two caught in the last three days. Although we have spent some time trying for one we haven’t had our turn yet, as Hammerhead and Bull Sharks have been first into our spread. Steve and Andrew did have one blow up what was probably a Tuna and then go fifteen feet into the air ( typical Mako air time) out of reach a good way behind our longest bait. Lots of sharks in the area with all the Bonito and Tuna. Only an occasional Sailfish. Some Wahoo around but not a sue bet. One here and there for us. We did manage a 28 pounder that bit on the outside edge of a bunch of Tunas. The heavy cloud cover that covered us two days ago has been replaced by sun with a high in the mid 70s range. Decent fishing and nice weather. It’s a good time to go Deep Sea fishing here in Ft. Lauderdale.
