Here in Fort Lauderdale at this time of year, the deep sea fishing can be somewhat monotonous for the crew but not for the guests. Most trips start out trolling for two reasons. The first is it is the best way to catch the most fish at this time of year and the second reason is… It creates a breeze. The reef area offers a target rich environment for our baits and this was no exception the other day when Harry and his group showed up. Dad’s and kids loaded their gear and the great thing about this group was their excitement at each and every strike no matter what it was.
While the mate and I see Kingfish after Kingfish and Bonito after Bonito, our guests don’t, especially the kids. Some of the smaller kids needed help reeling them in, others struggled themselves demanding to be left alone. Coquito pictured here was one of those as the Bonito gave him quite a turn. By the end of the trip, everyone had caught a fish or two and were proud to display their catch back at the dock where the Kings were cleaned and the Bonitos were prepared for the strips we use as bait.
It is this kind of trip that kindles the excitement back into the crew at catching some of the same fish day after day. And one thing this job has taught me long ago, when deep sea fishing off Fort Lauderdale, you just never know when something out of the ordinary will come along.
