This year’s first cold front has entered south Florida. Yes, I know… to some of you, speaking of a cold front that plummeted us into the upper 60’s might not seem cold… but after 5 months of temperatures in the 90’s, we’re delighted it finally arrived.
Preceding this front, the mullet run, with Tarpon, Tuna, Dolphin (Mahi Mahi) and Sailfish began their annual migration into our area. This is a trend we expect to continue. The recent catches have included some good sized Sails mixed in with the juvenile Sailfish we see this time of year. This small fighters can weigh as little as 5 lbs.. Most average around 15 lbs. or so and have lengths between 3’ and 6’. While their length is formidable, their weight has yet to be attained, giving them a flexibility that is amazing. It certainly adds to their ability to jump and put even seasoned anglers in a pickle with their speed.
Good sized “schoolie” Dolphin along with some good sized “gaffers” have also been being taken. While this summer’s off-shore fishing for these fish was dismal, the fall has given us some great catches, with finding these fish within just a few miles of shore. Occasional Wahoo have been mixed in when finding structure floating offshore.
Kingfish fishing on the reef has settled down some. We are still catching a few, but the numbers are down some from a month ago. With that said, the size of some of these fish has increased. 20, 30 pounders and even larger fish have been taken lately, a trend we enjoy seeing.
The daytime Swordfish trips are also doing well. While not always catching one, getting the bite has increased… and the SIZE of the fish being taken during the day is generally much larger than those taken at night. And being able to fish on the way to where the Swords are sure makes things nice.
So, as we enter our “winter” season and switch from mostly trolling to live baiting, we hope you’ll join us for a trip or two. Whether to catch dinner or just for the thrill, this time of year is what we all wait for.
